To check passport status during your Passport application process, you will find it is relatively simple; if the basic steps are followed.
Basic passport application process: Applying for a passport can be done through any passport agency or acceptance facility. A form can be obtained there, or through the internet, and should be submitted together with photocopies of necessary documents and passport photos. A fee of $100 for adults and $85 for minors under the age of 16 should accompany the application, and if you are applying for your first passport or if you are a minor, you should always make your application in person.
When to check: Status of passport applications can only be checked 5-7 days after the application has been lodged. Please note that it would take about 4-6 weeks for an application to be processed, or 2-3 weeks for the expedited service.
Through the website: Checking the status is simple. The first step would be to log on to the and access the secured site for passport status checks. Check the box to acknowledge that you have read their privacy statement, and click the submit button. Enter the relevant information on the page that you are directed to. For the last name, remember that you will have to enter any suffix to your name, such as Jr. If your last name contains a hyphen, you will have to leave that out in place of a space instead.
Special passport status checks: This applies for any regular passport. Checking the passport status of any diplomatic, official or no- fee passports would have to be directed to the travel office, rather than online.
Through the phone: An alternative way of checking your status is to call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778. You will need to speak to an operator, so be sure to call between 8 am to 10 pm, from Mondays to Fridays.
Safety issues: A passport contains personal information that may be used by criminals for illegal activities. When checking the status of your application online, remember to close all browser windows after use, especially when using a public computer. It might be good to delete the cookies and your browsing history as well. When providing information over the phone, ensure that your connection is secured. Ensure that you have logged on to the correct internet address or dialed the correct number so as to prevent your personal information from being shared.
Delays are common and should be pre-empted by making an early application for your passport. By being able to check the status of your application, though, much of your anxiety can be put at rest.
