passportphoto1When it comes to passport photo requirements, passport photo size is an important element of your . If your photos do not follow the exact specifications of the passport agency, your application may be rejected, which will delay your travel plans. By following these useful guidelines for passport photos, you can ensure this does not happen to you.

When submitting passport photos, 2 is the magic number. You have to provide 2 identical photos, and each photo must measure 2 inches by 2 inches. The specifications don't stop there, however. The height of the person's head in the printed photo must be 1 inch to 1-3/8 inches. The eyes must appear in the photo between 1-1/8 inches to 1-3/8 inches from the bottom.

In addition to the above guidelines, here are some very specific procedures laid out by the U.S. Department of State: Passport photos must be in full color and printed on a thin photo paper. Your image may not be retouched, airbrushed, or enhanced in any other way. The photos must capture the subject's entire face with eyes open, against a plain white or off-white background.

The person being photographed must not smile or make any other facial expression in the photo, so he or she appears natural. No hats can be worn in the photos. The only exception to this rule is for those who wear a hat or other headwear for religious purposes. Likewise, costumes, work or military uniforms, or any other clothing that does not qualify as "street clothes" cannot be worn for your photos. Again, there is an exception for religious attire.

The subject's face must be in clear focus. Tinted glasses cannot be worn, but you may wear your eyeglasses if you wear them on a regular basis. When you submit your passport photo, be sure that is no more than 6 months old.

The person who is taking your passport photos must also follow precise rules: The camera must be exactly 4 feet away from the person who is being photographed. Also, the camera should sit at eye level with the subject.

The resolution of the camera is also crucial. A digital camera must have a resolution of at least 1 mega pixel; nearly all of today's digital cameras have greater than 1 megapixel. The printer that is used to print the photos must be either an inkjet or a dye sublimation digital printer.

As you can see, passport photo size is only one piece of the passport photo requirements. If you go to a post office or chain drug store, they will most likely have the expertise and experience to get you the perfect passport photo shot.
