us-passport4A passport-sized photo is a color portrait exactly two inches square. In general, a professional photograph this size is preferred, and it is possible to have photos taken at some Passport Acceptance Facilities, but any print which meets the criteria below is acceptable.

  • The photograph must be recent; that is, taken within the last six months. It must be clear and in color, without areas of extreme contrast or glare. A blurry, dark or overexposed photo will not be accepted.

  • Snapshots, magazine photos, most vending machine prints, or copies of driver's license photos are not acceptable.

  • The photo should show a clear, front view, full face of the subject. He or she should be in normal street attire, without hat or dark glasses against a plain white or off-white background. The customer should have a natural expression, mouth closed, and eyes open and looking directly ahead.

  • In the case of a minor child, he or she must be the only subject in the photo. Nothing used to support the child, should be visible in the camera's frame.

  • Glasses should not be worn unless they are worn daily, and there must be no reflections from the lenses that obscure the eyes. Dark glasses are not allowed unless needed for medical reasons. A medical certificate may be needed in this case.

  • All hats or headgear should be removed for the photo, unless worn daily for religious reasons. In that case, a signed statement from the applicant must be submitted with the application verifying the item is worn daily for religious reasons. In all cases, no item or attire should cover or obscure any part of the face.

  • The subject should wear street clothes and avoid camouflage patterns. Uniforms and clothing that looks like a uniform should not be worn. The exception is religious attire that is worn daily.

  • Digital photos are acceptable if the digital camera has sufficient resolution; that is, it must be capable of capturing and storing images with 1 million pixels (1 megapixel) or more. However, when printing digital images, it is best to use a professional photography processing lab because many household digital printers cannot achieve the image quality required for passport and visa photographs even with photo-quality paper. Image-quality criteria, as described above, must be met whether the submitted photo is produced by conventional or digital means.

In some areas your Walgreens store can produce passport photos for you. For many people a Walgreen's passport photo service is the most convenient way to obtain a passport-sized photo.
